<h3><strong>Study by undergraduate Psychology student part of growing body of evidence that being outside is a good pick-me-up.</strong></h3> <p>Recent B.Sc. Psychology graduate Nicholas St. Germaine ‘18 worked alongside Dr. Elizabeth Nisbet, associate professor of Psychology at Trent, to survey students about their mood before and after taking a walk around campus. </p> <p>With over 30 km of trails and 1,400 acres of land, Trent is the ideal spot to study the correlation between spending time outside and mood, and recent B.Sc. Psychology graduate Nicholas St. Germaine ‘18 made some discoveries to feel good about. </p> <p>As part of his undergraduate honours thesis project, Nicholas worked alongside Dr. Elizabeth Nisbet, associate professor of Psychology at Trent, to survey students about their mood before and after taking a walk around campus. </p> <p>Participants completed a survey when first signing up for the study, answering questions about their connection to nature and overall mood. Next, the students walked in nature areas surrounding Trent, either at Lady Eaton Drumlin Nature Areas or along the Otonabee river, taking brakes along the way to observe and absorb the scenery. Students then completed another questionnaire related to their moods during and after the walk. </p> <p>Nicholas says that regardless of how students felt about nature upon signing up for the study, the effect of the walk on their moods were similar. </p> <blockquote> <p>“The data showed us that regardless of walking location, and people's connection to nature before the walk, being outside induced the same mood in everyone,” said Nicholas. “There were statistically significant differences between how two groups of students felt related or connected to nature, but the walks brought both groups, basically, to the exact same mood.” </p> </blockquote> <p><strong>Developing the Right Skills</strong></p> <p>With the help of Professor Nisbet, Nicholas says he was able to gain new academic and professional skills through the research experience. </p> <blockquote> <p>“Submitting drafts for feedback was interesting, because it really showed me new areas of improvement in my writing skills, and my researching skills,” said Nicholas. “So, a lot of what happened in the first semester was working on drafts of my literature review and getting feedback from my supervisor, which helped me learn what gaps in skills I had and where I needed to improve.” </p> </blockquote> <p>Nicholas presented his findings alongside 30 other Psychology Honours students during the annual Trent Psychology Department’s Honours Thesis Poster Presentation Day. The event is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge of research practices, the subject of their research, and to practice their science and research communication skills as they explain complex topics, methods, and analysis to a diverse audience. </p> <p>Nicholas says the honours thesis project also gave him an opportunity to make his mark on psychology. </p> <blockquote> <p>“I really liked the idea of contributing new knowledge to the field of psychology, instead of just taking and learning from the information already out there, to use in my essays, for example.” </p> </blockquote>
<h3><strong>M.BEMA student gains career-boosting experience contributing to campus land stewardship efforts.</strong></h3> <p>Identifying birds and invasive plants, monitoring for calling amphibians at night, and exploring Trent’s 11 on-campus Nature Areas were all highlights of Master of Bioenvironmental Monitoring & Assessment (M.BEMA) student, Emily Turner’s summer as she completed a four-month internship with the University’s Campus Planning & Development team. </p> <p><a href="https://www.trentu.ca/graduatestudies/programs/course-based-masters-programs/master-bioenvironmental-monitoring-assessment-mbema" target="_blank">M.BEMA</a> is a one-year, course-based program that provides students, like Emily, with a theoretical foundation in biological monitoring and assessment in an environmental context, and practical work experience through a four-month placement. </p> <p> </p> <blockquote> <p>“The M.BEMA courses exceeded my expectations as they did not just teach me the theories and ideas but also got me to apply the knowledge I gained through assignments that are applicable to the real world and careers in this field,” says Emily. “I loved the four-month placement because I knew it would give me that real-world field experience I could learn from and add to my résumé.” </p> </blockquote> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Contributing to Trent’s campus vision</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Trent’s commitment to the stewardship of the Symons Campus lands is outlined in the <a href="https://www.trentu.ca/trentlandsplan/plan/2021-trent-lands-and-nature-area-plan" target="_blank">2021 Trent Lands and Nature Area Plan</a>, the University’s vision for thoughtfully and respectfully integrating the natural and built environment and Indigenous Traditional Knowledge while addressing some of the campus and community’s most pressing needs. Working alongside Jennifer Clinesmith, director of Campus Planning & Development, and Ali Giroux, Trent’s land stewardship coordinator, Emily contributed to several key campus initiatives under the Lands Plan. </p> <p> </p> <blockquote> <p>“We tailor each placement to the season, our work plan, and the educational level and learning needs of the student,” explains Jennifer, adding that Emily is the team’s second placement student. “As an M.BEMA student, Emily comes to us with a lot of knowledge and analytical skills, which compliments the work we are doing in the field.” </p> </blockquote> <p> </p> <p>Among other tasks, Emily has been conducting field surveys of species at risk and invasive plants in the <a href="https://www.trentu.ca/natureareas/" target="_blank">Nature Areas</a>, monitoring wildlife movement to inform road mitigation measures, and collecting baseline environmental information at the future <a href="https://www.trentu.ca/trentlandsplan/initiative/seniorsvillage" target="_blank">University-Integrated Seniors Village</a> site. Her work will help inform the Nature Areas management plans, as well as the systems level plan for the <a href="https://www.trentu.ca/trentlandsplan/initiative/university-green-network" target="_blank">University Green Network</a> – a connected natural system that encompasses the Nature Areas and Trent’s diverse green spaces and productive landscapes. </p> <p> </p> <blockquote> <p>“The primary goal is to provide students with experiential learning and the necessary skills to enter the environmental workplace,” adds Ali. “This is a competitive field and practical training will give Trent students a competitive edge.” </p> </blockquote> <p> </p> <p><strong>Finding her calling</strong></p> <p>Learning as much as possible from her supervisors about conducting field surveys, identifying different plant and animal species and key protocols has inspired Emily to pursue a career as an environmental consultant when she graduates. </p> <p> </p> <blockquote> <p>“I have loved my placement and I am so happy that I got the opportunity to work with the Campus Planning & Development team,” she adds. “It was the perfect blend of field and office work to give me experience in both aspects. The fieldwork has been my favourite and supports my aspiration of working outdoors surrounded by plants and animals. <h3><strong>Data Science B.Sc. to address growing demand across industries and sectors, equipping students with skills and hands-on experience working with real-world datasets.</strong></h3> <p>Data Science B.Sc. to address growing demand across industries and sectors, equipping students with skills and hands-on experience working with real-world datasets</p> <p>Trent University has launched a new degree program, <a href="https://www.trentu.ca/futurestudents/degree/data-science-bsc?target=undergraduate" target="_blank">Bachelor of Science in Data Science</a>, to equip the next generation of data scientists with the skills and experience to make significant contributions to the complex area of data analysis across a variety of industries and sectors. </p> <p>Trent University is known for its interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning. The Bachelor of Science in Data Science will provide students with opportunities to put theory into practice through experiential learning opportunities, preparing students for a career in the growing field of data science. </p> <p>“Our program is unique in the sense that we have this notion of a focus area,” said Dr. Richard Hurley, chair of the Department of Computer Science at Trent University. “Students will be required to take four credits (one per year) in an area or discipline where they want to focus. For example, if your interest is in health data, maybe you take courses in Sociology, or if you are interested in social media data, maybe you do courses in Cultural Studies. If you’re interested in stock markets, you might take Business or Economics courses, or focus on Physics if you are interested in astronomy.”</p> <p>Professor Hurley explains that blending a foundation in data science with insights into a specific focus area creates an interdisciplinary lens through which students will be able interpret and value diverse datasets. </p> <p><strong>Application in real-world scenarios </strong></p> <p>Students in this program will dive into both theoretical study and hands-on exploration of data analytics, statistics and information management techniques, including programming, visualization, and predictive modelling. </p> <p>“In their fourth year, students will work under faculty supervision to propose, develop, implement and evaluate a data science solution from a real-world dataset,” added Prof. Hurley. “The goal is to bring students closer to how the whole process comes together in a work environment, where they have to pull the raw data, clean it and then analyze it using a variety of techniques.” </p> <p>The Data Science degree program will cover a wide range of topics—from techniques for data gathering, cleaning and manipulation to ethics in the discipline of computing—equipping students with the skills to extract data from structured and unstructured datasets, and apply their knowledge and insights across a broad range of application domains. </p> <p><a href="https://www.trentu.ca/futurestudents/degree/data-science-bsc?target=undergraduate" target="_blank">Learn more about Trent’s Data Science degree</a> </p> <p><em><strong>About Trent University</strong></em></p> <p>One of Canada's top universities, Trent University was founded on the ideal of interactive learning that's personal, purposeful and transformative.
