Admission Process

1. Application along with supporting documents will be processed on TEN Agent portal.
2. Application fee of 50$ will be charged from the student and it will be paid by credit card only 
3. Student will receive the admission offer either conditional or unconditional on his TEN Agent portal.After accepting the offer Fee invoice will be generated on student account.
4.After getting the fee invoice student can pay the fee and fee receipt can be found on TEN Portal  (Ten Agents)

Directed Study 0.5 unit
Prerequisites: permission of the department Chair and the faculty member involved
Independent examination of the research literature designed to meet the special needs of individual graduate students. The graduate student will make arrangements with the faculty member in advance of registration. Note: No more than 0.5 unit towards a graduate degree may be acquired through directed study.

GAHN 6325/NUTR 3325
Advanced Human Nutrition and Metabolism 0.5 unit
Prerequisite: permission of the instructor
An examination of how the human body metabolizes energy, nutrients and select non-nutrients in the context of health and disease. Topics covered include: regulation of energy metabolism, effect of organ failure on intermediary metabolism, and abnormal metabolism due to inherited defects in absorption, transport and metabolism of selected nutrients. Note: Students who have received credit for NUTR 3325 may not take this course for credit.

Food, Health, and Social Policy 0.5 unit
Prerequisite: permission of the instructor
A study of food, nutrition, and health policy in Canada. Topics include: introduction to policy; historical and theoretical foundations food, health, and social policy frameworks; overview of Canadian health care and food systems, and social safety net; theories of public policy; nutrition policy; the role of food and nutrition professionals. Note: Students who have received credit for NUTR 4326 may not take this course for credit.

Food, Nutrition and Aging 0.5 unit
Prerequisite: NUTR 2211 or equivalent or permission of the instructor
An overview of the food and nutrient recommendations for older and aging people living in a variety of community and continuing care settings. Topics will focus on the understanding and application of the determinants of healthy eating, resident centered care and nutrition care.
Note: Students who have received credit for NUTR 3330 may not take this course for credit.

Issues in Food Product Development 0.5 unit
Prerequisite: permission of the instructor
A study of the principles of food product development and the conditions that result in novel food production. Current and potential markets for novel food ingredients and health applications for reformulated and conceptually new food products are reviewed/discussed/explored. This course provides practical skills in food product development. Note: Students who have received credit for NUTR 4400 may not take this course for credit.

Medical Nutrition Therapy I 0.5 unit
Prerequisite: permission of the instructor
An introduction to the use of the Nutrition Care Process in the treatment of disease with nutrition. Topics covered will include nutritional assessment in the clinical setting, parenteral/enteral nutrition support, pharmacology; pathophysiology and treatment of metabolic stress, cancer and disorders of the gastrointestinal system and immune system. Note: Students who have received credit for NUTR 4408 may not take this course for credit.

Medical Nutrition Therapy II 0.5 unit
Prerequisite: permission of the instructor
A continuation of NUTR 4408/GAHN 6408. Topics covered will include Diabetes Mellitus, cardiovascular disease, obesity management, hypertension, renal disease, neurological disorders, dysphagia management, pulmonary disorders, inborn errors of metabolism. Issues pertaining to interprofessional practice will also be addressed. Note: Students who have received credit for NUTR 4409 may not take this course for credit.

Nutrition Education in the Community 0.5 unit
Prerequisite: permission of the instructor
The theoretical perspectives that form the basis of nutrition education and their application to the development of educational strategies and programs to improve the public’s eating habits will be studied. Developments in nutrition education research, the role of the political and legislative process in health promotion, and the effectiveness of nutrition education interventions will be examined. Note: Students who have received credit for NUTR 4414 may not take this course for credit.

Management and Entrepreneurship in Nutrition Practice 0.5 unit
Prerequisites: permission of the instructor
A study of the theory, policies and practices involved in planning and management for new or existing nutrition, food service or dietetic enterprises. Based on a business or project plan model, topics include identification of innovations, marketing, operations planning, change management, risk control and financing. Note: Students who have received credit for NUTR 4417 may not take this course for credit. Contemporary Issues in Food, Health and Disease 0.5 unit
An examination of the latest research findings concerned with the nutritional implications of food components. The mechanisms of how food components influence health or disease, the emergence of dietary supplements, and gene-diet interactions are examples of the types of issues examined.

Nutrition Education 0.5 unit
An examination of educational theories, research perspectives and methods from selected disciplines within the behavioural and natural sciences that are applicable to food and nutrition education, intervention and research efforts.

Nutrition and Population Health Assessment 0.5 unit
Prerequisite: GAHN 6670 or permission of the instructor
An examination of the principles underlying derivations and application of nutrient requirements, and the theoretical basis of nutritional assessment. An evidence-based approach will be used to explore the relationship between population level surveillance and nutrition policy.

Community Education 0.5 unit
An examination of the theories, principles, and practice underlying community education with a focus on creating learning environments for capacity building and for transforming systems for community health. Adult education and participatory leadership approaches will be used to explore the role of a nutritionist in a variety of community settings.

Issues in Food Security 0.5 unit
An examination of concepts, programs and policies related to food security from a sustainable food systems and social justice perspective. Policy approaches to address food security from the individual, household, community, national and global perspective will be analyzed in relation to an emerging food movement in Canada.

Clinical Trials in Food and Nutrition 0.5 unit
A study of the design and conduct of clinical trials on foods and nutraceuticals. Topics include regulation of health claims for foods and natural health products, methodological aspects of clinical trials in free-living and controlled environments, laboratory facilities for food trials, data management, biomarkers, research ethics and clinical trial registries.

Quantitative Methods of Nutrition Research 0.5 unit
Prerequisite: admission to the master’s program or permission of the instructor
An examination of the quantitative methodologies, designs and methods that may be used for research in food, nutrition and dietetics. Attention will be given to application of descriptive and inferential statistics, knowledge translation and ethical considerations.

Qualitative Methods of Nutrition Research 0.5 unit
Prerequisite: admission to the master’s program or permission of the instructor
An examination of various qualitative methods and underlying methodological approaches in food, nutrition, and dietetics. Attention will be given to study design, sampling, recruitment, data collection and analysis, knowledge translation and ethical considerations.

Description

The Master of Science Applied Human Nutrition and the Master of Applied Human Nutrition programs provide students with the opportunity for advanced level study in nutrition, with an emphasis on issues related to community nutrition, food and human nutrition. The programs explore the theoretical foundations of nutrition through critical reflection on current research and practice within the discipline and drawing from other related disciplines. The Master of Science Applied Human Nutrition is comprised of three and a half units of course work and one and half units of thesis research. The Master of Applied Human Nutrition is comprised of five units of course work.

Students seeking registration as a professional dietitian and who meet Partnership for Dietetic Education and Practice (PDEP) undergraduate competencies may also apply to the Internship Education Program when they apply to either the Master of Science Applied Human Nutrition or the Master Applied Human Nutrition program. The Internship Education Program enables students to build on theoretical knowledge and internship experiences to fulfill the competencies required by PDEP to reach entry-level professional dietetic competence. Please consult the PDEP website for information about acceptable undergraduate  programs.

Students who are not seeking registration as a professional dietitian may apply for the Food and Nutrition Practicum Program during study in either the Master of Science Applied Human Nutrition or the Master Applied Human Nutrition programs.
