The Therapeutic Recreation diploma program will prepare students to work with a variety of clients in many different health-care settings. Students will explore the impact of recreation and leisure on individual wellness and how to enhance the quality of life for clients through leisure activities. Students will gain knowledge and skills in program planning, client assessment, implementing individual and group activities, and working with a variety of different client populations. Students will explore the concepts, theory and practical experiences related to leadership and critical thinking.
This program allows students to meet the requirements for supporting membership status with the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA). Effective April 1, 2021, ATRA will require new applicants for professional membership to have a degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure studies.
Therapeutic recreation professionals who wish to meet ATRA standards are welcome to take individual courses through Open Studies. You are advised to first contact ATRA@alberta-tr.org to determine specific course needs, and then apply for Open Studies. After applying, you can contact the program chair at 780.644.6300 to request enrolment in specific courses.
